For the first time ever the Utah County Sheriff is allowing uniformed Deputies to grow a goatee or beard - but there is a price! What prompted this change?
On October 4, 2016, Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy sent an email to all employees of the Utah County Sheriff's Office. In that email he described an opportunity for all sworn employees to get involved with a unique opportunity to raise funds for the Shop With A Cop program in Utah County. Since 1991 law enforcement officers across Utah County have participated in this program which has helped thousands of needy children who might not otherwise have gifts for Christmas.
What makes this year's fundraising opportunity unique is that Sheriff Tracy has granted a 3 month suspension of the Utah County Sheriff's Office grooming policy as it relates to facial hair. In the past Deputies have expressed an interest in the type of effort he described. Among other things, he said, ". . . let's tear the roof off of the donation levels and see if we can set a new record of financial support for this worthy program and event!"
Except for some administrative details, here is the content of Sheriff Tracy's email:
"HOLD THE PRESSES! FIRST TIME EVER! BREAKING NEWS!
"Yes, it's true, if you have already heard the rumors!
"In furtherance of a Utah County Sheriff's Office show of support for the Shop With A Cop Program, I am suspending the Sheriff's Office Grooming Policy on facial hair for the months of October, November, and December 2016, for a price!
"During the months of October thru December, any sworn Deputy, and to be inclusive, and avoid any level of discrimination, this applies to both male and female Deputies, a Deputy may grow and wear a goatee or beard, neatly groomed, no wild man contest beards allowed, even while serving in a uniformed position, for the donation of $50.00 per month to the Utah County Shop With A Cop Program.
"We all know and have witnessed the remarkable results this event has had over the years helping hundreds of children every year who otherwise would not have a Happy Holiday Season. This is a program that we as the Sheriff's Office and the Deputy Sheriff's Association have greatly supported in the past and in an effort to meet the cost to support the ever increasing numbers of needy children, I am authorizing the suspension of the facial hair policy in exchange for donations to this program.
"Let me be the first to wish each of you a Happy Holiday Season and may we all remember our family and friends, and those less fortunate than us, during this time when we celebrate, each in our own way, this season of worship, reflection, joy and celebration.
"All the Best and Seasons Greetings to you all!
"Sheriff James O. Tracy"
